Slow Cooked BBQ Ribs

A few posts ago I stated the while visiting my Grandma I snagged some recipes from her vast collection. I also stated that I've been trying to make an effort to make recipes from paper (cookbooks, cards, magazines) vs. relying solely on the internet. I'm glad that I didn't pass this recipe up.

I'd never made ribs in the slow cooker and had always wanted to try. I love the juicy, meaty ribs that just fall off the bone. What better way to achieve ultimate soft chewy meat than in a slow cooker? There is none.

What I ended up doing is mixing the sauce and cutting the ribs in advance, letting them sit in the slow cooker dish overnight (refrigerated) and then in the morning just took them out, and cooked them! It was a terrific time saver for me, and by allowing the ribs to soak in the BBQ sauce all night, I feel it probably took in a lot of the flavor.

So, here is the recipe, I hope you enjoy! These were a little more sweet and not so smoky/spicy, for those who have a preference.

4 lbs bone in beef ribs

2 tsp salt

1 medium onion, chopped

1 cup packed brown sugar

1 cup apple butter

1 cup ketchup

1/2 cup lemon juice

1/2 cup orange juice

1 tbsp steak sauce

1 tsp. black pepper

1 tsp minced garlic

1/2 tsp worcestershire sauce

Cut ribs to fit into slow cooker dish. Sprinkle ribs with salt.

Mix remaining ingredients. Pour 1/2 mixture in slow cooker pot, place ribs in pot, and pour remaining sauce over ribs. Cook on high for 5-6 hours.
